Since its founding on June 25, 2024, Black Urban Innovation Alliance Inc. (BUIA) has worked to expand opportunity, access, and long-term pathways to success for youth, families, and adults in underserved urban communities. Through education, leadership development, workforce training, environmental learning, and community engagement, BUIA has built a growing foundation of programs across Los Angeles and Chicago.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT & EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT


BUIA’s Urban Innovation Youth Group & Programs serve approximately 60 youth ages 4–18 through structured enrichment experiences designed to strengthen academic readiness, creativity, leadership, and social-emotional development.


Programming includes:

• Arts & crafts

• Gardening & environmental learning

• Music production exposure

• Drama and theatre activities

• Cooking education

• Homework support

• Leadership development

• Entrepreneurship exposure


These experiences provide safe, consistent, and engaging learning environments that extend beyond the traditional classroom and support whole-child development.


COMMUNITY INVESTMENT & ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING


In 2026, BUIA secured a $10,000 Urban Agriculture Microgrant to support the Unity Garden Project at the Watts Empowerment Center.


This initiative transforms outdoor space into a community-based learning environment focused on:

• Food education and nutrition awareness

• Gardening and sustainability skills

• Environmental stewardship

• Hands-on youth engagement

• Community wellness and beautification


The Unity Garden serves as both an educational tool and a shared community space designed to strengthen neighborhood connection and pride.


ADULT LEARNING & WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT


Through the Adult Learning & Leadership Academy, BUIA has trained and supported 24 adults through workshops and professional development opportunities focused on:


• Childcare quality improvement

• Safe sleep (SIDS) education

• Business development

• Leadership training

• Workforce readiness


These efforts strengthen individual capacity while improving the quality of services provided to children and families across communities.


VOLUNTEER & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT


BUIA has engaged 9 volunteers who support programming, outreach, event coordination, and organizational development.


In addition, BUIA has hosted 7 community events designed to:

• Strengthen youth engagement

• Build family and community connections

• Share resources and opportunities

• Celebrate youth achievement

• Promote leadership and collaboration


The organization has also established 5 strategic partnerships with community organizations and stakeholders to expand reach and deepen impact.

LOOKING AHEAD


BUIA is positioned for continued growth with a focus on expanding youth enrollment, strengthening adult workforce pathways, increasing community partnerships, and scaling environmental and leadership programming.


Future priorities include:

• Expanding youth participation and program capacity

• Deepening Unity Garden educational programming

• Growing workforce and leadership training opportunities

• Increasing volunteer engagement and community partnerships

• Strengthening sustainable funding and long-term organizational infrastructure
